Beach Photos for Dating Apps Without the Cliché

The beach shot appears on almost every profile because it works. Open space, warm light, and body language you only get when you're actually relaxed. The problem is that most beach photos on dating apps are the same photo: shirtless, squinting, arms out, taken by nobody in particular.
The version that works is clothed, full body, and lit from the side by a low sun. It reads as a holiday rather than a gym progress update, and holidays appeal to far more people than abs do.

When to shoot it, and the light
The last half hour before sunset, with the sun low over the water and slightly behind you. Wet sand acts as a reflector and throws light back up under your chin, which is why beach photos at this hour flatter almost everyone.
The mistake that ruins this shot
The centred, arms-out, facing-camera pose. Walk, look off to one side, or turn back toward the camera mid-stride. Anything with a direction to it beats standing still.
