Dating apps show your photos small, and most of a grid is beige and grey. A saturated wall behind you is one of the few reliable ways to be the thumbnail that gets tapped.
The risk is obvious. A big enough mural will eat you. The wall is the set rather than the subject, and the whole craft of this shot is keeping that true.
What to wear
- Solid, plain colours. A patterned shirt against a painted wall is visual chaos
- Something dark or neutral if the mural is bright, since the contrast is what separates you from it
- Streetwear that is actually yours. This setting punishes costume more than most
When to shoot it, and the light
Open shade or an overcast day. Direct sun on a painted wall bounces coloured light onto your skin and gives you a green or magenta cast that is genuinely hard to remove.
The mistake that ruins this shot
Standing dead centre in front of the biggest element. Move off to one side, close enough to the wall to stay in focus with it but far enough to read as being in front of it.
Where it goes in your profile
Third or fourth. It makes a set look like it belongs to someone with taste rather than to a template.
